lg#Jolly Roger#Our logo’s origins go back to the late 1990s, when our detractors, in particular poachers, began to refer to us as pirates because of our aggressive approach. Paul Watson decided to embrace this accusation in a positive way. With assistance from Geert Vons, he created a new logo based on the traditional pirate symbol, but with a completely different meaning.

In his version, the black background represents oblivion and the emptiness of extinction, while the skull illustrates the toxic power of human greed. In the place of the crossbones usually found in the Jolly Roger, a shepherd’s crook symbolises our commitment to protecting ocean life while a trident stands for our proactive tactics. The crossing of the crook (protection) and the trident (action) expresses our non-violent but aggressive approach. A dolphin and a whale are placed in a yin-yang formation on the skull, illustrating the harmony that we try to preserve and that we should all draw inspiration from.

As whales and dolphins are the most intelligent lifeforms in the oceans, their position at the top of the human skull signifies that humanity has much to learn from cetaceans!
