Mary Read (1690-1720) and Anne Bonny (around 1705-1782) are the two most famous female pirates in history. Their epic tale has spanned the centuries and has largely permeated the collective imagination. Daniel Defoe was the first to recount the eventful lives of these "sea wolves" (Zoe Valdes) in A General History of the Most Famous Pirates, under the pseudonym "Captain Johnson".
