In 2024, Sea Shepherd France and the Spanish NGO WeWhale launched an emergency mission to protect the Iberian orca, one of the most threatened and misunderstood marine populations: Save the Iberian Orca, a long-term mission combining science, education, and outreach.
Present in the Strait of Gibraltar for over 3,000 years, there are now only about thirty Iberian orcas left. Since 2020, some have been displaying mysterious behavior toward the rudders of sailboats, causing fear, material damage, and sometimes retaliation.
"Espartes: Chronicles of the Iberian Orca" is our first feature-length documentary, filmed entirely during the mission. A 60-minute poetic journey through the Strait of Gibraltar, meeting the orcas, the humans trying to understand them, and the fragile bond that unites us.
Espartes, a logo between myth and reality, power and vulnerability: from the deep darkness emerges an orca tail, imposing, like an ancient relic risen from the depths.
At its heart stand the Pillars of Hercules, the mythological symbol of the Strait of Gibraltar, ancestral territory of the Iberian orcas.
Around them, an entire marine universe is depicted: tuna, dolphins, turtles, sperm whales...
An ecosystem of which the orcas are an essential part.
The cracks running through the silhouette evoke the fragility of a population now critically endangered.
