In French Guiana, the ocean is being plundered in silence. Illegal nets trap everything in their path. Leatherback turtles, Sotalia dolphins, juvenile sharks, rays... A sea out of control. 12 years ago, French Guiana was the world's primary nesting area for leatherback turtles. Today, their population has plummeted by more than 98%. Clandestine gillnetters are up to 4 times more numerous than authorized vessels.
So we have returned to sea aboard the John Paul DeJoria to patrol, document, identify, and remove illegal nets: Operation Papillon was born, and the fight is only just beginning.
